Air Conditioning repairs on the Vauxhall Mokka

The Mokka (or Mokka X) produced from 2012 - 2020 is one of the makes of vehicle we see quite often. As a refined MPV it features climate control with air conditioning as standard however it also suffers regularly with the A/C condenser leaking. Below is a picture of a 2017 model that came to us recently with just 35k miles on the clock. The bumper has been removed to allow replacement of the leaking condenser.

Tips and Advice

The vehicle had already been "re-gassed" by someone else and it had leaked out again so the owner was keen to have someone who knew what they were doing with air conditioning fix it properly for them. Newer vehicles including this Vauxhall Mokka use the latest HFO-1234yf refrigerant gas which is much more expensive than the older R134a gas so it is more important than ever to try and identify and fix any leaks before refilling the system.

With the condenser removed from the vehicle we can clearly see oily staining at the bottom and along the whole length of the unit. The staining is caused by PAG oil leaking out and dirt sticking to it. The staining to the right has a green tinge which is due to leak detection dye that glows brightly under an ultra violet light.

The vertical tube on the end of the condenser is the drier. These used to be a completely separate unit but they tend to be built in to the condenser on most modern cars. There is a plastic bung at the bottom of the aluminium tube and you can see where green dye has been coming out indicating that this is also leaking.
The owner of this vehicle had been quoted over £600 to have a condenser fitted elsewhere and they were pleasantly surprised when we quoted £300 "all-in" to supply and fit a new OEM quality Nissens unit including refilling with gas.
